Andre Agassi donates his Shanghai Masters prize money to World Mental Health Day

Tennis great Andre Agassi has announced that he will donate his $50,000 prize money for winning the Shanghai Masters to World Mental Health Day, which takes place on November 10. Agassi, who retired after taking the title at Shanghai, said he was inspired to do so by a conversation he had with former Los Angeles Lakers player Magic Johnson, who encouraged him to help the cause of mental health, which has prompted a major rise in the number of American adults seeking treatment for mental health issues. “I hope that Andre’s gesture highlights that sport, like any activity, can be a tool to help our communities and our culture to better understand mental health issues and to better understand what it takes to overcome mental health issues,” Andre Johnson said in a statement. “For far too long, many have wondered how to get help when they need it and wondered why mental health issues haven’t received more attention.” This is one instance of stars showing how they feel are could have a big impact on the millions of people struggling with their mental health every day.
